Commonly asked questions regarding pest issues and treatments:
-
Many people try to address pest problems on their own. Some have success while others don’t want to tackle the issue. Achieving success is likely determined by type of pest, the severity of the infestation and knowing what to do in that situation. Pest control is more than spraying a pesticide or putting out a mouse trap. A pest professional knows the type of pest, where that pest lives and the steps that need to be taken so there is a successful outcome. Pests are tough, sneaky creatures that enter, live and reproduce in your home. Many of these pests can be a health hazard. A pest control professional will know where to look for pests and then make expert recommendations to you.

How quickly you see results will depend on the type of pest, treatment methods and cooperation from the occupant of the home. For example, immediate results can be seen when a wasp nest is removed or treated with a liquid pesticide. An application of dust to this same nest will take longer. When using baits for ants, roaches and rodents, the process takes longer since the pests need to ingest and share the product for it to be effective. The pest control professional will be able to give you an approximate time frame for your situation.

Often pesticide spray and bait are used together when treating roaches or ants. Together, they reduce pest populations from two different angles. While they are useful together, some people do not want pesticide sprayed anywhere in their home, even the lower risk type. If this is the case, bait alone can be used. It gets placed in specific areas where the pests live. Roaches or ants locate, eat and share the bait. After sharing the bait, the population of the pest can be reduced or eliminated. If the pest is a rodent, bait is used to address the problem. The type of pest, the severity of the problem and other factors determines the type of treatment that is best for your situation.

Pests can enter your house from the outside. They can enter through cracks, holes, under doors or one of several other areas. There are so many ways to enter. Let’s use ants as an example: Ants enter your house. You go to the store to buy a product and spray the ants in the kitchen. After spraying, you don’t see any additional ants so you go sit down to watch your favorite television show. Unfortunately, the ants you treated came from a colony in the soil outside your house. That colony probably has several nests. As a result, the treatment you applied did very little to address the ants living near your house. An exterior treatment may be helpful in keeping the ant population down near your house. Fewer ants outside could mean fewer on the inside. At Next Generation Pest Control, we explain the problem, propose a treatment plan, then let you decide.

There are a few reasons that more than one treatment may be required. (1) Some pests are resistant to chemicals. Many pests are resilient, highly mobile. and can travel easily between locations within a home or apartment building. Identifying the source of the infestation and taking the proper steps to control/possibly eliminate the pest can take multiple service visits. (2) Upon entering a home, there may be clutter in the areas that need to be treated. Cluttered areas cannot be treated. Only a partial treatment may be available at that time. (3) Cooperation from the occupant is also important. It can be a big help in resolving the issue. Lack of cooperation can result in the need of additional treatment. As a result of these or other issues, more than one treatment is often needed.

A regularly scheduled pest service will reduce the pests around your home. The fewer pests around the home should allow fewer pests to enter the home. Also, identifying a small number of pests early can be addressed before they become a bigger problem. It lets us see possible signs of pest activity and act before it becomes a heavy infestation. A pro-active approach to managing pests will keep your home and family safe from annoying and potentially harmful pests.

Yes. It is very possible that there are termites in or near the house, even if an inspector says there are no signs. Having a termite inspection is important but it is not a guarantee. An inspection for wood destroying insects is intended to locate obvious signs of these insects in the accessible areas of the house. If the inspector sees any of the signs, she/he will note that in the report and you can take steps to have the house treated and repaired. Unfortunately, termites do not always travel or cause damage in areas that are accessible. Very often they cannot be seen. This is a significant limitation of a termite inspection.
